Meet Kate, floral art designer and owner of UNVEILED Network Member, Perfect Bouquet Full Of Flowers. From her home studio, she creates gorgeous floral arrangements for couples tying the knot in locations such as Cheshire, Manchester, Liverpool, and beyond.
Growing up, Kate’s home was always chock full of flowers and plants – her father was a cactus grower and her grandmother had a huge garden with beautiful scented homegrown flowers. So it was just a matter of time before her passion for flowers turned into a full-time career – and we’re ever so glad it did!
We just love her statement floral style – think ethereal and au naturale, and unlike anything you’ve seen carried down the aisle before! WORKSPACE
Kate says: A few years ago, I ran a flower shop in Northwich in Cheshire. It was my big dream which came true, and a huge lesson in my floral career. When I decided to focus more on wedding floral design, I closed the doors and moved my workshop place to my home. Now I work from my little home studio and I am so happy about that. What I need to do now is finish designing my garden and fill it with lots of homegrown flowers ready to freshly pick each season for any final touches I might need for my flower creations.
THE IMPORTANCE OF FLOWERS
Flowers have traditionally been used to celebrate or acknowledge the most important moments in our life, including the birth of a baby, weddings, or funerals. I think they are one of the most important aspects to a wedding when you’re looking to make this day so special and truly unique. I say that not only because I am a floral designer and flower freak, but because it’s a part of our culture and tradition. You feel so much better being surrounded by beautiful, scented flowers and they can transform any ordinary space into the magical venue of your dreams.
SIGNATURE STYLE
I love to take inspiration from nature and make very relaxed, natural designs using the prettiest seasonal flowers and greenery – especially when they come from my garden, local growers or from foraging. I’d say my style is a bit natural garden, a bit romantic, a bit boho, and whimsical and modern, too.
INSPIRATION
As I said before, my big inspiration is nature, but I also love to follow flower growers and floral art designers from across the world. I particularly like modern Australian style.
A lot of brides use Pinterest to find their dream flowers which is absolutely fine – I use it as well. Instagram also has lots of photos you can search through, and wedding blogs are great for discovering new trends and learning more about the best wedding suppliers.
A UNIQUE APPROACH
My approach is very special and individual. All couples are different, so I love to treat them uniquely. It’s quite a long process which starts from booking well in advance of the wedding and then lasts right up to the day itself.
When couples send me enquiries, I always reply and offer them my help, comments, quotes and send them images of my work.
At the moment, it’s difficult to meet, but I used to host wedding consultations face to face, when we could talk over a cup of tea or coffee, and I could show them real flowers or draw out my ideas. I believe meetings will come back, but I am happy to chat with my couples via phone etc.
Also, when a couple decides to book with me, they can contact me with any issue in the lead up to their wedding – even if it’s a very difficult and stressful time, like what we’ve been experiencing recently with the postponement of many weddings.
A SERVICE COUPLES LOVE
Based on feedback, many of my couples simply couldn’t believe how amazing their wedding flowers were, and that they got everything they wanted and more. Their guests even commented on how they’d never seen flowers like this. Some brides have even told me they have never cried over flowers before, but at their wedding they did! Oh boy, when I hear these kinds of words, my heart melts. I am so grateful to be part of their big day. Sometimes, when they say things like that, it feels like the best payment I could ever get for my work.
MATERIALS
I usually source my materials from local growers of the season, and from my favourite and trusted wholesalers during the year. Also, I love to use wild flowers and greenery.
ADVICE ON CHOOSING WEDDING FLOWERS
My top three tips are: choose flowers and a florist whose style you love the most; when planning your budget – focus on your priorities and the things you must have on your wedding day (for example a spectacular bouquet, arch or tables centrepieces) and please don’t skimp on your dream flowers; and finally, trust your florist and their advice, they are professionals and know what will be best for you.
NO-NOS FOR COUPLES
In my opinion these are: choosing the wrong florist – the couple need to ensure the aesthetic of your chosen florist matches the look which they are looking for; ordering and booking wedding flowers too late – waiting for the last moment is not always a good thing; and watch out for filtered photos of flowers when looking for inspiration online as these can be different colours in real life – ask your florist to show you the true colors of the flowers you love.
FAVOURITE FLOWERS AND SEASONS
There are a lot of them! Depending on the season and availability, I love to play with garden roses, dahlias, eustoma (Bohemian Mocca is my favourite!),ranunculus, anemones, delphinium, tulips (I love Tulips Brownie), scabiosa, peonies, helleborus, sweet peas, poppies or phlox Cherry Caramel.
My favourite season is summer, because I have the biggest choice of flowers then, but I also love winter and spring when ranunculus and anemones are available.
FLORAL TRENDS
I think this year there will be a lot of micro weddings, but the couples don’t have to minimise everything literally – they can create whatever vibe they want to go for. I hope they will focus on non-traditional ceremony structures, with for example, a unique altar or backdrop for the ceremony using a large floral installation. Natural and white colours will still be popular, but also full colours of dried flowers arrangements. I also expect to see more subdued compositions becoming popular, with fewer mixed textures of flowers.
