Rebecca and Clayton chose Matfen Hall in Northumberland for their elegant wedding day, bursting with foliage, florals and tasteful vintage touches.

the proposal
We first met while attending the University of Victoria on Vancouver Island. It turned out that we previously attended the same high school for one year, as well as attending many of the same social events, but had never properly met. It didn’t take long for us to realise that we were meant to be.
We got engaged on 18th June 2017, which happened to be Father’s Day. While back in the UK, Clayton surprised me by proposing on the sand dunes on Bamburgh Beach. He knew how important it was to have my father’s blessing and to have my family there for such an important occasion.
the venue
Our ceremony and wedding reception took place at Matfen Hall. Clayton said that we had to get married in the North East of England, where I was born and where my family lives.
My mum suggested Maften Hall and the team was so accommodating, giving us the full wedding tour, without us even having an appointment. Not only did we fall in love with the venue and everything Matfen Hall had to offer in its wedding package, but the wedding date we had set our minds on had just become available, so everything just seemed meant to be.
We had the wedding of our dreams at Matfen Hall, and it really felt like a fairy-tale all thanks to the wonderful staff, who made the day go so smoothly, allowing us to enjoy every moment. We would definitely recommend the venue to other couples – it exceeded all of our expectations!

Our wedding photographers were The Hendry’s; a husband and wife team with a creative, candid and romantic style.
Darren and Sarah were great on our wedding day! They are very cool and laid back, which helped to make us feel more at ease and comfortable while being photographed all day.
We were completely blown away by the results. We couldn’t believe how well the whole day was captured and how beautiful the images were. We are so pleased with how they turned out!
the details
We didn’t have a particular theme, but there were 1920s vintage elements and influences that we incorporated into our décor and styling. Overall, we wanted our wedding to be classic and traditional, but with modern influences.
The colour scheme for our wedding party was shades of blue while the colour scheme for the décor was white and gold with an abundance of dark green foliage used throughout the venue.
Our florist created some incredible designs, including large long and low arrangements on the fireplaces, a floral arch piece for the table plan, beautiful cascading centrepieces and a moongate circular arch for the Dutch Gardens. They also decorated the Great Hall for the ceremony, which looked like a fairy-tale with foliage and florals entwined around the banisters, glass plinths with floral arrangements at the start of the aisle and foliage entwined around lanterns on the floor either side of the aisle.
the dress
I knew from the very beginning that I wanted a dress that demonstrated 1920s influences and I found the perfect one at The Wedding Dress Company in Corbridge. An Enzoani dress that made me feel absolutely amazing with a nude under-layer, ivory lace details and beading, and crystal buttons down the back.
the special touches
Near the end of the evening, we brought everyone out into Matfen’s courtyard with sparklers, which looked so magical. Africa by Toto came on the speakers and everyone started singing along. It was such a funny moment, but so beautiful at the same time to have all of the people we love in one place and having such a great time together.
