Katie & David chose a chic, relaxed style for their pretty wedding day at one of our favourite Northumberland wedding venues. Their Woodhill Hall boho celebration appeared in Issue 09 of UNVEILED.
the proposal
We got engaged in Budapest in 2015. We were there to see the beautiful Christmas market – it was so seasonal and romantic. David had the ring with him all day, waiting for the right moment to ask. In the end he picked a perfect spot at the castle.
the venue
We got married at Woodhill Hall, Otterburn, Northumberland. We were searching for a venue that could host us for a whole weekend as we had family coming from far and wide. As soon as we looked around Woodhill we both knew it was the place for us, and that we could make it incredible for our wedding.
The venue can sleep 32 people in its beautiful, quirky bedrooms so it was just perfect for what we had planned. We hosted a barbecue on the Friday night – the Scandinavian style barbecue hut is awesome. Stretching out the celebrations was great to make sure we had a conversation with everyone who attended the wedding.
Overall, Woodhill Hall was amazing, and provided exactly what we had wanted. It has the personality to make a wedding really memorable, and being exclusively ours for the whole weekend made us feel extra special.
the photography
We were drawn to Matt Ethan’s images as they have such a beautiful light, airy feel to them and we loved that his previous couples all looked so happy and relaxed in his photos.
On the wedding day we were keen that not too much time was taken up with posed shoots, but Matt put us instantly at ease, working discreetly and capturing natural moments, which was perfect.
Matt sent us a link to the preview of our images while we were on honeymoon in Bali, and I burst into tears of happiness as soon as I saw them. We loved that moment on the beach looking through the photos and were so pleased with them all.
the details
We wanted a relaxed, fun, boho-style wedding that reflected our personalities. We did so much DIY ourselves and really enjoyed all of the planning.
David and I did most of the decorating with the help of family and a couple of handy bridesmaids the day before the wedding. Woodhill Hall is absolutely beautiful so it didn’t need much! They have a ‘Prop Shop’ available though, to help yourselves to, which is full of handy items.
I took on the flower centrepieces: jars and vintage bottles decorated with lace and flowers and placed on log slices with tea lights. I also did our chalkboards, stationery, Polaroid photo place names (which guests loved!), and, with the help of my dad, the table plan and signage.
In the centre of the tipi, our florist created a foliage garland with hanging tea lights, it was so beautiful, and was right above the top table.
the dress
My dress was Carmen by Maggie Sottero. I bought it from YAP Bridal Boutique in Newcastle – the girls who work there are simply amazing and made me feel so special. I loved the flow of the bottom of Carmen and that the underneath slip dress was fitted and showed my shape.
the special touches
We had amazing guitarist and acoustic singer. Hattie Murdoch, perform at the wedding, which included singing me down the aisle. As a surprise for David I messaged Hattie and secretly switched the song to his favourite – Bob Marley, Is This Love – which Hattie learned especially. It took David completely by surprise and the lyrics were so well suited.
